Ab dem 11. Jahrhundert wurde das Gebiet von Gent größer, da verschiedene Lehen daran angeschlossen wurden. Ein wichtiger Anziehungspunkt für die Erweiterung nach Westen war zweifellos die Ansiedlung einer Grafenresidenz am Westufer der Leie. Dieses gräfliche Gebiet umfasste neben der Burg das Gravensteen auch eine Siedlung (die Oudburg, ein Teil des Patershol) und einen Vorhof (das heutige Sint-Veerleplein). Dieses Ensemble wurde im Laufe des 13. Jahrhunderts angeschlossen.
