Lieven Bauwens (1769-1822) schmuggelte eine Mule Jenny-Spinnmaschine aus England nach Gent. Bauwens war der Sohn eines wohlhabenden Färbers. Er zeigte von klein auf Interesse an Mechanik. Er ging als Industriespion nach England, um technische Innovationen in der Baumwollindustrie zu erfahren. Neben dem Schmuggeln von Teilen einer mechanischen Baumwollspinnerei aus dem Land brachte er auch britische Techniker nach Gent. Dadurch konnte Gent schnell von den technischen Innovationen in der Textilindustrie profitieren. Lieven Bauwens wurde im Laufe der Geschichte geachtet und geschmäht. Der Unternehmer und seine „Mule Jenny“ fanden ihren Platz in den Geschichtsbüchern.
Trotz der Kontroversen um ihn errichtete der Stadtrat von Gent 1885 ein Denkmal für Lieven Bauwens.
