Lamoraal Graf von Egmont ist wahrscheinlich die wichtigste Figur in der Geschichte von Zottegem. Er war Herr von Zottegem und einer der größten feudalen Landbesitzer zur Zeit von Kaiser Karl. Auf Befehl des Herzogs von Alva wurde der Graf 1568 hingerichtet, weil er sich um die Religionsfreiheit sorgte. Auf dem Markt findest du sein Standbild. Bemerkenswert ist, dass in nur 500 m Entfernung ein identisches Standbild steht. Etwas weiter steht das Egmontburg.
Unter der Unsere Liebe Frau Himmelfahrt Kirche auf dem Markt befindet sich die Grabkammer von Egmont, wo die sterblichen Überreste und die seiner Frau Sabina von Bayern aufbewahrt werden.
