Er ist der einzige in Flandern, Baujahr 1862 - 1863, 1918 bei dem Rückzug der Deutschen zerstört und schnell wiederhergestellt, um die stark frequentierte Eisenbahnlinie Oudenaarde-Ronse-Leuze wieder befahrbar zu machen. Der Eisenbahntunnel diente während des II. Weltkriegs eine Nacht lang als Zufluchtsort für Hitlers "Panzerzug". An einem Wintertag im Jahr 1966 rutschte ein Stück des Spichtenbergs bis über das Bahnbett, direkt vor dem Eingang des Tunnels, wodurch der Zugverkehr Oudenaarde-Ronse mehr als ein Jahr unterbrochen war.
