Im Frühling 1909 zog es Permeke wieder nach Latem, zu seinen Freunden aus Latem, aber er lebte dort eher zurückgezogen und interessierte sich vor allem für die schwere und pasteuse Taktilität von Albert Servaes, den er bereits aus seiner Zeit an der Gentser Akademie kannte; sie tauschten viel aus, wurden Freunde und malten gemeinsam auf dem Land in und um Latem. Servaes konnte damals bereits als der "Vater des flämischen Expressionismus" gelten.
