Mewa war der Name dieses Dorfes im Jahr 1146. Vielleicht leitet sich dieser Name von dem fränkischen Begriff für Wiese ab. Meeuwen hat auch ein Tabakmuseum (Weg nach Helchteren 32). Der Ursprung dieses Museums ist in der verschwundenen Pfeifenfabrik von Bree und der Zigarettenindustrie zu suchen. An regionalen Produkten hat Meeuwen keinen Mangel. Appelbierenvlaai (Apfelbeerenkuchen) ist ein leckerer Limburgischer Kuchen mit Äpfeln und Blaubeeren. Ebenfalls auf Basis von Blaubeeren ist das Bratselèrke, ein Blaubeerenlikör, der mit Honig gesüßt ist und einen Alkoholgehalt von 19 Grad hat. Blaubeeren und Honig sind typische Naturprodukte, die in Meeuwen häufig vorkommen. Das Getränk kann eiskalt genossen werden, lässt sich aber auch gut mit Sekt mischen. Der Name des Getränks ist das Dialektwort für 'Knoeiertje'.
