Kurz bevor die Geusen am 8. Mai 1581 Lede einnahmen, hatten sie bereits die Burg eingenommen. Die Eroberung verlief laut Boons Geuzenbuch relativ einfach, da die Soldaten, die die Burg verteidigten, kaum oder keinen Widerstand gegen die vorrückenden Geusentruppen leisteten. Zu diesen Geusentruppen hatten sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt eine große Anzahl von Gentser Streitkräften angeschlossen.
