Der Eisenpfahl wurde 1851 von der belgischen Armee errichtet. Dieser Pfahl war ein Referenzpunkt für genaue Distanz- und Höhenmessungen. Der Pfahl ist ein geodätisches Signal, das Teil eines geodätischen Dreiecksnetzes ist. Die beiden anderen geodätischen Basen befanden sich in Ostende und Hampiré.
Als dieses Gebiet noch eine ausgedehnte Heidefläche war, ermöglichten die weiten Ausblicke präzise Messungen zu Kirchtürmen und anderen Landmarken in der Umgebung durchzuführen.
