In der Schlacht von Ligny trafen am 16. Juni 1815 – zwei Tage vor der Schlacht bei Waterloo – die französischen Truppen der Grande Armée unter Napoleon auf eine preußische Armee unter dem Kommando des Feldmarschalls Blücher. Ligny war Napoleons letzter Sieg. Er konnte die Truppen Blüchers unter Einsatz der Alten Garde zwar schlagen, aber nicht völlig vernichten. Dies sollte in Waterloo fatale Folgen für ihn haben. Sie ist daher die Schlüsselschlacht für die darauf folgenden Ereignisse.
