Die Quellen des Flusses befinden sich im Weiler Birven im östlichsten Teil der wallonischen Gemeinde Aubel gegenüber dem amerikanischen Soldatenfriedhof Henri-Chapelle. Der Fluss fließt dann entlang Clermont, Mortroux, Bolbeek, Dalhem und Berneau zur Maas in Moelingen. Nebenflüsse sind unter anderem die Bel und die Bolland. Die Bolland ist ein linker Nebenfluss und mündet bei Dalhem in die Berwijn. Die Bel mündet bei der Abtei Val-Dieu in die Berwijn. Die Abtei liegt am rechten Ufer der Berwijn.
