Der Sonianwald, mit einer Fläche von etwa 4400 Hektar, ist das größte und am besten erhaltene Relikt des historischen Kohlenwaldes, der systematisch reduziert wurde. Ein ausgedehntes Netz von Alleen durchzieht den Wald. Der Sonianwald besteht aus zwei Teilbereichen: dem südwestlichen Teil des Sonianwaldes zwischen Hoeilaart und Sint-Genesius-Rode und dem nordöstlichen Teil in Tervuren und Kraainem, der auch den Kapuzinerwald, den Marnixwald und das Arboretum Tervuren umfasst.
