Hier in Rupelmonde wurde der berühmte Kartograf Gerard Mercator geboren. Auch hier hörte er das Epilog seiner Streitigkeiten mit den kirchlichen Autoritäten, die ihn der Ketzerei verdächtigten. So musste er 1533 Leuven verlassen, um einer Untersuchung seiner persönlichen Überzeugungen zu entgehen. Zehn Jahre später wurde er in Antwerpen wegen Ketzerei verhaftet und in Rupelmonde eingesperrt, aber er konnte aus diesem rechtlichen Schlamassel entkommen.
