Bevor es möglich war, Rinder und Pferde im Stall oder auf der Weide zu tränken, war es notwendig, die Herde mehrmals täglich an einen Tränkeplatz zu bringen. Dies war eine harte und zeitraubende Arbeit.
In Dörfern, die zu weit von einem Fluss oder Teich entfernt waren, mussten die Tiere ihren Durst an Wassertrögen (die von der nächsten Quelle gespeist wurden) stillen.
Es gibt 2 Arten von rechteckigen Trögen. Einer hat ein Doppelwaschbecken ; der Überlauf des ersten Beckens versorgt das zweite. Wahrscheinlich dienten diese Gefäße auch als Toiletten. Die anderen, älteren Mülleimer haben nur ein Waschbecken.
