Rogier Van der Weyden ist einer der flämischen Primitiven des 15. Jahrhunderts, Zeitgenosse der Brüder Van Eyck. Er wurde in Doornik als Roger de la Pasture geboren. Er arbeitete viele Jahre in der Werkstatt seines Meisters Robert Campin. Sein wichtigstes Werk ist die "Die Kreuzabnahme". 1435 wird Van der Weyden Stadtmaler in Brüssel. Er arbeitet viele Jahre an den Gerechtigkeitsfeldern für das neue Rathaus, aber leider ging das bei den französischen Bombardements von 1695 verloren.
