La Chaux-de-Fonds fɔ̃], frankoprovenzalisch und umgangssprachlich [la tʃo]) gehört neben Biel/Bienne und Le Locle zu den bekanntesten Städten der Schweizer Uhrenproduktion. Es ist die grösste Stadt im Hochjura und die viertgrösste Stadt in der französischsprachigen Westschweiz . La Chaux-de-Fonds liegt auf rund 1000 m ü. M. und ist damit eine der höchstgelegenen grösseren Städte Europas. La Chaux-de-Fonds gehört zum Kanton Neuenburg. Trotz seiner Grösse hat es mit dem ausgedehnten, nur sehr dünn besiedelten Umland einen gewissen ruralen Charakter behalten können, was ihm auch den Namen Ville à la campagne eingetragen hat.
Wegen des architektonischen Wertes der schachbrettartig angelegten Bebauung und der zahlreichen Jugendstilbauten wurde La Chaux-de-Fonds im Jahre 2009 zum UNESCO-Welterbe erklärt.
