Baar liegt nördlich der Stadt Zug auf 443 m ü. M. Baar wird von Ost nach West von der Lorze in einem grossen Bogen umflossen, welche im Ägerisee entspringt und in den Zugersee mündet, von dem sie weiter in die Reuss fliesst. Der Hausberg ist die nordöstlich gelegene Baarburg.
Das Zentrum der Gemeinde Baar bildet die gleichnamige Ortschaft, das weitläufige Gemeindegebiet umfasst zudem die drei Siedlungen Allenwinden, Blickensdorf und Inwil, den Weiler Deinikon und weitere Einzelhöfe.
