Das Erzgebirge ist ein Mittelgebirge in Sachsen und Böhmen. Knapp nördlich der Kammlinie verläuft die deutsch-tschechische Grenze. Die höchsten Erhebungen sind der Keilberg und der Fichtelberg .
Die erzgebirgische Natur wurde seit der ersten Besiedlungswelle im Mittelalter intensiv durch menschliche Eingriffe geformt und hat eine vielseitige Kulturlandschaft entstehen lassen. Insbesondere der Bergbau mit Halden, Stauanlagen, Gräben und Pingen prägte an vielen Orten das Landschaftsbild und die Lebensräume von Pflanzen und Tieren auch direkt. Eine Auswahl historisch weitgehend original erhaltener technischer Denkmäler sowie mit dem Montanwesen in Verbindung stehender Einzeldenkmale und Sachgesamtheiten gehören seit 2019 als Montanregion Erzgebirge zum UNESCO-Welterbe.
