Freyung ist die Kreisstadt des Landkreises Freyung-Grafenau im Regierungsbezirk Niederbayern. Die Stadt liegt im Dreiländereck Bayerischer Wald nahe an der Grenze zu Tschechien und Österreich.
Die Kreisstadt Freyung liegt im Südosten des Bayerischen Waldes am Ufer des Saußbaches, der später die Wolfsteiner Ohe bildet. Nördlich von Freyung befindet sich der Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald. Freyung liegt 33 km nördlich von Passau, 17 km von der Grenze zu Tschechien, 18 km von Grafenau und 27 km von der Grenze zu Österreich entfernt.
