Die Gemeinde Schwalmtal liegt am Niederrhein im Westen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen und ist eine kreisangehörige Gemeinde des Kreises Viersen im Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf. Ihre größten Ortsteile sind Waldniel und Amern.
Umgeben ist Schwalmtal von einer typisch niederrheinischen Landschaft. Nur rund 6 km² des insgesamt gut 48 km² großen Gemeindegebietes sind bebaut. Namensgeber für die Gemeinde war der Fluss Schwalm. Das Schwalmtal wird auch das „Tal der Mühlen“ genannt .
Schwalmtal ist in den östlichen Teil des Naturparks Maas-Schwalm-Nette integriert.
