Blankenberg liegt im Süden des Saale-Orla-Kreises, an der Stelle, an der die Saale, von Bayern kommend, ihren Weg durch Thüringen fortsetzt, nachdem sie den Ort in einem Bogen umflossen hat. Die Gemeinde erstreckt sich entlang eines Bergrückens. Der Anger liegt auf einer Höhe von etwa 460 m ü. NN, die Kirche bei 500 m ü. NN und der Sportplatz am Galgenbühl bei 560 m ü. NN.
Angrenzende Orte sind Blankenstein, Harra und Pottiga im Saale-Orla-Kreis sowie Issigau im bayerischen Landkreis Hof.
