Gersthofen ist eine Stadt im bayerisch-schwäbischen Landkreis Augsburg und grenzt unmittelbar an die Stadt Augsburg.
Archäologische Funde lassen darauf schließen, dass das Gebiet bereits in der Jungsteinzeit besiedelt war. Zur Römerzeit zog an Gersthofen die Via Claudia vorbei. Die alte Pfarrkirche St. Jakobus major steht auf den Resten eines römischen Merkurheiligtums aus dem 1. Jahrhundert, das bei den Abrissarbeiten 1854/55 entdeckt wurde. Der historische Siedlungskern Gersthofens bildete der ehemalige Klosterhof. Seit ca. der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jahrhunderts ist dort ein karolingischer Herrenhof und spätere Widdum nachweisbar.
