Bad Sassendorf liegt im Zentrum der Soester Börde am Südrand der Westfälischen Bucht zwischen dem Haarstrang und dem angrenzenden Sauerland im Süden sowie dem Münsterland im Norden. Im Gemeindegebiet entspringt die Ahse, ein Nebenfluss der nördlich gelegenen Lippe.
Die Gemeinde Bad Sassendorf besteht aus zwölf Ortschaften. Diese sind Bad Sassendorf, Bettinghausen, Beusingsen, Elfsen, Enkesen im Klei, Heppen, Herringsen, Lohne, Neuengeseke, Opmünden, Ostinghausen und Weslarn.
