Die Stadt Ahlen liegt im westfälischen Münsterland im Norden von Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie ist eine mittlere kreisangehörige Stadt und die größte und wirtschaftlich bedeutendste Stadt des Kreises Warendorf im Regierungsbezirk Münster.
Der Name der Stadt wird erstmals um 850 in der Vita Liudgeri II erwähnt. Seine Bedeutung und die auf den Namen Bezug nehmende Darstellung des Stadtwappens mit einem „geflügelten Aal“ sind nicht geklärt.
