Bad Schwartau ist die größte Stadt im Kreis Ostholstein in Schleswig-Holstein und ein staatlich anerkanntes Jodsole- und Moorheilbad. Die Stadt liegt am Fluss Schwartau unmittelbar nördlich angrenzend an Lübeck und bildet mit dieser Stadt eine Agglomeration.
Der Ortsname geht auf den wendischen Namen des Flusses Schwartau zurück, der als „die Schlängelnde“ gedeutet wird. Damit wird Bezug auf den sehr gewundenen Unterlauf des Flusses vor der viel später erfolgten Begradigung genommen.
