Die Gemeinde liegt an der Soeste im Oldenburger Münsterland, sieben Kilometer östlich von Cloppenburg. Im Nordosten endet das Gemeindegebiet an der Lethe, die in diesem Teil das Naturschutzgebiet Ahlhorner Fischteiche durchfließt. Der nördlichste Teil der Gemeinde Emstek gehört zum Naturpark Wildeshauser Geest.
