Der Zusatz „im Erzgebirge“ wurde 1883 erstmals von der Post genutzt, um Verwechslungen mit der Stadt Oelsnitz im Vogtland zu vermeiden, wenngleich Oelsnitz nicht exakt im Erzgebirge, sondern im Erzgebirgsbecken liegt.
Die Stadt liegt im Erzgebirgsbecken ca. 14 km östlich von Zwickau und 20 km südwestlich von Chemnitz. Der Ort liegt am Hegebach, einem Zufluss des Lungwitzbaches und an der Würschnitz, einem Zufluss des Flusses Chemnitz.
