Das mittelalterliche Stadtbild mit seinen Mauern, Toren und Türmen ist lebhafter Beweis für die reiche Geschichte Schongaus. Um die Wende zum 13. Jahrhundert mit eigenen Rechten ausgestattet, war die Stadt Verwaltungsmittelpunkt, Wittelsbacher Nebenresidenz und bayerische Grenzfestung am schwäbischen Lech. Kunstvoll ausgestaltet zeigt sich die barocke Stadtpfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt. Besonders spannend sind die Erlebnis-Führungen in der Altstadt Schongaus. Wissenswertes und Interessantes der Stadt- und Baugeschichte sowie Anekdoten aus dem mittelalterlichen Leben der Bürger kann man auf diesen Stadtführungen erfahren. Henkerstöchter, Spießbürger oder Hexenkinder machen sich mit Gruppen auf den Weg durch Schongau und berichten vom mittelalterlichen Leben.
