Görlitz ist die östlichste Stadt Deutschlands, Kreisstadt des Landkreises Görlitz im Freistaat Sachsen und größte Stadt der Oberlausitz. Sie liegt an der Lausitzer Neiße, die seit 1945 die Grenze zu Polen bildet. Die Grenze trennte die östlichen Stadtteile auf der anderen Seite des Flusses ab. Diese Stadtteile bilden jetzt eine eigenständige polnische Stadt, die Zgorzelec heißt.
Görlitz bildet zusammen mit Bautzen und Hoyerswerda einen oberzentralen Städteverbund, ist auch Mitglied der Euroregion Neiße und bildet seit 1998 mit Zgorzelec eine Europastadt.
