Hürth ist eine mittlere kreisangehörige Stadt im Rhein-Erft-Kreis, Regierungsbezirk Köln, Nordrhein-Westfalen. Der Ort verdankt seine Entstehung der wirtschaftlichen und industriellen Entwicklung der Region durch die Erschließung der Braunkohlevorkommen im Rheinischen Braunkohlerevier zum Ende des 19. und Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, die 1930 den Zusammenschluss seiner Ortsteile zu einer Großgemeinde erforderlich machte. Ihre heutige Bedeutung als Standort für die chemische Industrie, Dienstleistungen und Massenmedien verdankt die Stadt einer gelungenen Restrukturierung und Wirtschaftsförderung nach Auslaufen des Kohleabbaus 1988.
