Hochemmerich mit 17 943 Einwohnern ist einer der alten Siedlungskerne der 1934 gebildeten Stadt Rheinhausen, die am 1. Januar 1975 zum Duisburger Stadtbezirk Rheinhausen wurde.
Im Laufe der Zeit wechselte die Bedeutung des Namens Hochemmerich. Als Kirchspiel existierte Hochemmerich ca. seit 900, als Bürgermeisterei .
