Die Altstadt von Kassel im heutigen Stadtteil Mitte gehörte vor den Kriegszerstörungen ab 1943 und den Abrissen der Nachkriegszeit zu den bedeutendsten Mitteleuropas. Zentrum der mittelalterlichen Stadt war der Altmarkt. Wenige Gebäude des alten Stadtzentrums sind nach der Bombardierung Kassels erhalten geblieben. Der in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren erfolgte Neuaufbau ist bis heute prägend. Manche Nachkriegsensembles stehen unter Denkmalschutz, etwa an der Treppenstraße.
