Die Stadt war von 1655 bis 1918 Residenzstadt der Grafen und Fürsten von Waldeck-Pyrmont und danach bis 1929 Hauptstadt des Freistaates Waldeck, bevor dieser seine Selbstständigkeit durch den Anschluss an Preußen verlor. Der Ortsname ist erstmals im Jahre 1131 mit der Gründung des Augustinerinnen-Stift Aroldessen genannt. In manchen der zur Stadt Arolsen 1974 eingemeindeten Dörfer wird zum Teil noch das aussterbende niederdeutsche Waldecker Platt gesprochen.
