Prenzlau ist die Kreisstadt und der Verwaltungssitz des nordbrandenburgischen Landkreises Uckermark, eines der Mittelzentren in Brandenburg. Prenzlau ist der historische Hauptort der Landschaft Uckermark und zählte im Mittelalter neben Berlin-Cölln, Frankfurt und Stendal zu den vier größten Städten der Mark Brandenburg.
Der Ortsname ist slawischen Ursprungs und bedeutet „Siedlung eines Mannes namens Premyslaw“. Zwischen dem 15. bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gibt es Belege sowohl für die Schreibweise Prentzlau/Prenzlau als auch für Prentzlow/Prenzlow.
