Marsberg ist eine Kleinstadt im nordöstlichsten Teil des Sauerlandes, Hochsauerlandkreis . Sie entstand in der heutigen Form 1975 im Zuge der kommunalen Neugliederung Nordrhein-Westfalens aus Obermarsberg und Niedermarsberg sowie weiteren, bis dahin selbstständigen, Gemeinden.
In Obermarsberg soll mit der Irminsul auf der Eresburg das wichtigste Heiligtum der Sachsen gestanden haben. Nach deren Zerstörung durch Karl den Großen entstand an dieser Stelle eines der ältesten Klöster in Westfalen, das später an das Kloster Corvey fiel. Niedermarsberg entwickelte sich zu einem Handelsort, war aber politisch abhängig von Obermarsberg. Bedeutend war in der Gegend seit dem frühen Mittelalter der Bergbau und die Verarbeitung von Erzen.
