Die Stadt Witten liegt im Südosten des Ruhrgebietes im Land Nordrhein-Westfalen und ist eine Große kreisangehörige Stadt des Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreises im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg.
Bis 1974 war Witten eine kreisfreie Stadt. Im Zuge der Neugliederung 1975 wurde sie in den Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis eingegliedert, dessen größte Stadt sie heute ist. Gleichzeitig erreichte sie den Status einer Großstadt, den sie bis Anfang 2007 beibehielt.
