Die Stadtgemeinde Ternitz ist mit 14.681 Einwohnern die bevölkerungsreichste und mit einer Gesamtfläche von 65,34 km² die flächenmäßig fünftgrößte Gemeinde im Bezirk Neunkirchen in Niederösterreich.Ternitz liegt im unteren Schwarzatal am Beginn des Steinfeldes im Industrieviertel in Niederösterreich. Mit der Gösing-Hochberg-Gruppe, die zugleich auch mit 898 m der höchste Punkt der Gemeinde ist, bildet das Gemeindegebiet von Ternitz die nördliche Umgrenzung der Buckligen Welt am Alpenostrand. Hauptfluss ist die Schwarza, die das Gemeindegebiet in West-Ost-Richtung durchfließt. Im Streckenverlauf des Ortsteiles Pottschach ist der Fluss die Grenze zum Gemeindegebiet von Wimpassing im Schwarzatale.
