Frohburg liegt etwa in der Mitte zwischen Leipzig und Chemnitz am Übergang der Leipziger Tieflandsbucht zum Sächsischen Burgen- und Heideland, ca. 35 km südlich von Leipzig und 10 km südlich von Borna. Durch Frohburg fließen das Flüsschen Wyhra und durch einige Ortsteile die Bäche Eula und Kleine Eula.
Der Name wird für eine Eindeutschung des französischen Burgnamentyps der Kreuzritterzeit gehalten, der im Mittel-Niederdeutschen die Bedeutung „vro“ hatte, was gleichbedeutend ist mit „die Burg, die froh stimmte oder auf der ein frohes Ritterleben herrschte“.
