Der Wasserturm in Rothenburgsort wurde im Jahre 1848 nach Plänen von Alexis de Chateauneuf entworfen und vom Ingenieur William Lindley erbaut. Alexis de Chateauneuf hat auch die Alsterarkaden und die Alte Post in der Hamburger Innenstadt entworfen.
Der Wasserturm ist heute das Wahrzeichen des Stadtteils. Mit einer Höhe von 64 Metern ist er unübersehbar. Das Bauwerk steht unter Denkmalschutz. Das Gelände rund um den Turm wird heute noch von den Hamburger Wasserwerken als Museum und als Zentrale der Wasserwerke genutzt. Der Turm wurde für die Stadtwasserkunst errichtet. Er ist kein Bauwerk für einen Hochbehälter, wie Wassertürme sonst, sondern er diente der Druckregulierung. Die Verteilung des Wassers erfolgte mittels dampfbetriebener Pumpen.
