Er wurde 1861 im Auftrag vom Bauträger Adolph Sierich parallel zur Alster angelegt, damit die Feuchtwiesen am linken Alsterufer entwässert und bebaut werden konnten. Er fängt unterhalb des Winterhuder Fährhauses an und verläuft parallel zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts kanalisierten Alsterlauf . Er zweigt an der Anlegestelle der Alsterschifffahrt „Winterhuder Fährhaus“ vom Alsterstreek ab und verläuft auf dessen linker Seite hinter den Häusern und Grundstücken der Straße Leinpfad bis zum Rondeelteich.
Die Straße Leinpfad wurde nach dem damals an der Alster entlangführenden Lein- oder Treidelpfad benannt, auf dem Kähne an Leinen flussaufwärts gezogen wurden. Die Villengrundstücke liegen auf den ehemaligen Feuchtwiesen, während der Leinpfad am Alsterstreek entlangführt; deshalb wird dieser oft irrtümlich für den Leinpfadkanal gehalten.
