Mit täglich 25.000 Reisenden und Besuchern ist der Kieler Hauptbahnhof nach dem Lübecker Hauptbahnhof der zweitgrößte Bahnhof Schleswig-Holsteins. Der Bereich rund um den Hauptbahnhof ist der am meisten frequentierte Platz in Kiel. An den Busanlagen, im Hauptbahnhof sowie auf dem Bahnhofsvorplatz sind täglich mehr als 100.000 Menschen unterwegs.
Der Bahnhof ist Ausgangspunkt von Strecken nach Hamburg, Lübeck, Flensburg und Husum. Er befindet sich direkt an der Kieler Förde. Die Fähranleger nach Oslo und Göteborg liegen wenige hundert Meter entfernt.
