Die Volkssternwarte Tirschenreuth wurde 1964 durch Gerhard Franz gegründet und ist in der nördlichen Oberpfalz eine einmalige astronomische Einrichtung. Die Vermittlung der Freude an der Natur steht im Vordergrund des Observatoriums. Mittlerweile wurde die Sternwarte zu Ehren ihres Gründers in Gerhard-Franz-Volkssternwarte umbenannt.
Eigentümer ist die Volkshochschule Tirschenreuth; betrieben wird die Volkssternwarte durch die astronomische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Tirschenreuth unter der Leitung von Peter Postler.
