Das Naturschutzgebiet mit dem Kennzeichen NSG WE 202 ist circa 117,5 Hektar groß. Es ist deckungsgleich mit dem gleichnamigen FFH-Gebiet. Nach Norden, Osten und Süden grenzt es an das Landschaftsschutzgebiet „Hausbäke-Niederung“. Das Gebiet steht seit dem 28. Juli 1990 unter Naturschutz. Im Jahr 2018 wurde die Naturschutzverordnung neu gefasst. Dabei wurde das ursprünglich rund 105 Hektar große Naturschutzgebiet an die Grenzen des FFH-Gebietes angepasst und auf seine heutige Größer erweitert. Zuständige untere Naturschutzbehörde ist die Stadt Oldenburg.
