Das Reichssicherheitshauptamt wurde am 27. September 1939 zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges vom Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler durch Zusammenlegung von Sicherheitspolizei und Sicherheitsdienst gegründet. Das Amt stellte als eines von zwölf Hauptämtern der SS mit ca. 3000 Mitarbeitern die zentrale Behörde dar, die den größten Teil der deutschen Repressionsorgane zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus leitete.
Ein Großteil der einzelnen Ämter und Amtsgruppen war über ganz Berlin verstreut untergebracht. Seinen Hauptsitz hatte es im Prinz-Albrecht-Palais in der Wilhelmstraße 101, wo sich die Büros von Reinhard Heydrich und Ernst Kaltenbrunner befanden, und in der Prinz-Albrecht-Straße 8 , wo die Zentrale der Gestapo war. Das Gelände gehört zur 2004 entstandenen Gedenkstätte Topographie des Terrors.
