Der Tagebau Nochten ist ein Braunkohletagebau in der nördlichen Oberlausitz, der von der Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG betrieben wird. Im Tagebau Nochten werden bis zu 18 Millionen Tonnen Braunkohle im Jahr gefördert. Der Heizwert der Braunkohle liegt bei 8.750 kJ/kg; sie enthält etwa 55,5 % Wasser, 0,5 % Schwefel und 5,0 % Asche.
Das 1. und das 2. Lausitzer Flöz wird von einer mächtigen Deckschicht aus Sanden und Schluffen aus der Zeit des höheren Mittelmiozän überlagert. Deshalb müssen für eine Tonne Braunkohle sieben Kubikmeter Abraum bewegt werden.
