Himmelkron ist eine Gemeinde im oberfränkischen Landkreis Kulmbach. Der gleichnamige Hauptort ist Sitz der Gemeindeverwaltung.
Der Name Himmelkrons war ursprünglich „Pretzendorf“, dort befand sich ein Schloss der Grafen von Weimar-Orlamünde. 1279 wurde das Schloss Pretzendorf in ein Kloster der Zisterzienserinnen umgewandelt, das den Namen Kloster Himmelkron erhielt. 1545 wurde es im Zuge der Reformation aufgehoben. Die Markgrafen von Brandenburg-Bayreuth übernahmen den Klosterbesitz und erbauten dort eine Sommerresidenz. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde der Name Himmelkron auf den Ort übertragen. Das spätere Amt des seit 1792 preußischen Fürstentums Bayreuth fiel im Frieden von Tilsit 1807 an Frankreich und wurde 1810 an das Königreich Bayern verkauft. 1818 wurde Himmelkron eine selbstständige politische Gemeinde.
