Der heilklimatische Kur- und Kneippkurort dient mit seinen alpinen Skigebieten am Nebelhorn, dem Söllereck und dem Fellhorn/Kanzelwand, den Langlaufloipen, dem Eisstadion und auch den Skisprungschanzen sowie der Skiflugschanze als Wintersportplatz und ist zudem ein beliebtes Ziel für Bergsteiger.
Oberstdorf, die südlichste Gemeinde Deutschlands, liegt im Oberstdorfer Becken im Illertal, in den Allgäuer Alpen. Der Illerursprung liegt bei Oberstdorf. Mit einer Ausdehnung von 230 km² ist Oberstdorf nach der Landeshauptstadt München und Lenggries flächenmäßig die drittgrößte Gemeinde im Freistaat Bayern. Sie liegt auf 813 Meter Höhe . Höchster Gipfel des Ortes und ganz Schwabens ist die Hochfrottspitze.
