Vincent van Gogh und sein Bruder Theo sind auf dem Friedhof von Auvers-sur-Oise begraben. Am 27. Juli 1890, im Alter von 37 Jahren, verletzte sich Van Gogh mit einer Pistole an der Brust. Er wollte sich durch das Herz schießen, machte jedoch einen klassischen Fehler, indem er dachte, das Herz befinde sich auf Höhe der linken Brustwarze. Aufgrund dessen verfehlte er und starb am 29. Juli an inneren Blutungen, während Theo an seiner Seite war. Sechs Monate später starb auch Theo. Er hinterließ einen Sohn, Vincent Willem, den Großvater des berühmten Filmemachers und Kolumnisten Theo van Gogh, der 2004 in Amsterdam ermordet wurde und der ebenfalls durch eine Kugel sterben würde, genau wie sein berühmter Verwandter.
