Metzeral ist mit 1109 Einwohnern das älteste Dorf des Grande Vallée und beherbergt eine reiche Geschichte. Bereits 817 wurde es erwähnt und sein Name leitet sich wahrscheinlich vom lateinischen Wort für "kleine Trockensteinmauer" ab. Nach seiner 1801 erlangten Autonomie blühte das Dorf im 19. Jahrhundert dank der Textilindustrie auf. Als Opfer des Ersten Weltkriegs ist Metzeral heute ein Tourismuszentrum, insbesondere mit seiner Abfüllanlage für das Quellwasser "Valon". Die Kirche Emm, die zu Ehren der Gefallenen des Krieges von 1914-18 errichtet wurde, ist ein Wallfahrtsort. Der Soldatenfriedhof "Chêne Millet" erinnert an die Verheerungen des Krieges. Die Region bietet zahlreiche Wandermöglichkeiten rund um symbolträchtige Orte.
