Der Ort, an dem die Oper Garnier erbaut wurde, war extrem feucht. Trotz acht Pumpen konnte der Boden einfach nicht trocken gelegt werden. Der Architekt Garnier baute daher einen Betonzisterne, in dem das Wasser aufgefangen wurde. So entstand die Legende, dass die Oper auf einem unterirdischen See erbaut wurde. Diese Geschichte wurde auch in "Das Phantom der Oper", der Geschichte von Gaston Leroux, verwendet. Es gibt auch eine Legende, dass hier Forellen in diesem See gezüchtet worden sein sollen.
