Durch die Porte du Bas gelangt man in das Stadtzentrum von Mutzig, das an der elsässischen Weinstraße etwa 30 km von Straßburg entfernt liegt
Das Untertor wurde 1559 erhöht und ist eines der bemerkenswertesten Überbleibsel der mittelalterlichen Stadtbefestigung. Ein 1895 gemalter Saint-Maurice, das Wappen der Stadt, schmückt die Ostseite. Bis 1775 war dem Tor ein Vorwerk (Barbakane) vorgelagert, das durch einen monumentalen Bogen ersetzt wurde, der 1894 abgerissen wurde.

Mutzig ist im Mittelalter eine Stadt, in der Recht gesprochen wird. Hexenprozesse und Kindsmorde finden statt, die man übrigens in den Archiven der Stadt finden kann.
